Fundraising night to help save GYG
Five professional musicians and performers are appearing for one night only at a fundraising music event in Gravesend to support our mission to keep our doors open. All five used to attend GYG 10 years ago and have gone on to have successful careers.
The live performers include Kwaye, who is the Patron of GYG. Kwaye cites GYG as helping him with his first steps in music when he was just 12 years old, by singing with GYG youth services.
Now they return to Gravesend for one night only on Friday 8 December at Blakes night club - and you could buy one of the tickets available.
The event, called GYG The Reunion, is set to be a very special night of live music with all five performers, who all grew up locally, professional performers and musicians and set to wow audiences.
Performers at the event alongside Kwaye includes:
Kwaye, singer and performer whose work has been used on Netflix show On My Block
Charlie Flights, singer and actor
Thomas Jay, singer / songwriter who regularly performs in London with Sofar Sounds and has been supported by BBC Introducing.
Brooke Sylvia, professional singer
Johnny Taiwo, singer, musician, DJ and producer
They are all outraged about the funding cuts being made by Kent County Council and the devastating impact this will have on GYG, which may face closure next year as a result.
Thomas Jay said; ‘When I was 16 the amazing youth workers from GYG came to my school and changed my life. They believed in me and helped me develop a talent I didn’t realise I had. It was there met some brilliant friends, who I am thrilled to be performing alongside for the first time in more than 10 years at this fundraising event to give back to the people who gave so much to us. It is unbelievable that KCC is cutting funding from a service for young people at a time when cost of living is having such a negative impact on people’s families, opportunities and health.’
There are only 250 tickets available for a one-night-only event, costing £9 each with all profits going to the youth service to help try and keep our doors open next year.
These services have been provided to local children and young people in Gravesham for more than 12 years, supporting thousands of families and young people since that time.
Next Tuesday (21 November) Kent County Council decide on their proposed cuts to Commissioned Youth Services, which impacts more than 60 youth services across Kent and may see GYG close its doors.
